In Her Words…
It all began with a question: what do I want to do with my life? We’ve all faced it at some point and probably multiple times in our lives. That question would eventually be answered with a phone call.
After completing undergraduate degrees in International Studies and Spanish at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I struggled to discern a career path for myself with degrees that didn’t have many immediate, practical applications. However, it had given me a skill that would go on to launch a career: fluency in Spanish.
I entered the workforce in 2010, which was an abysmal job market for a new grad with a Liberal Arts degree. As I applied to job after job, not knowing where to concentrate my efforts, I made a list of the things that appealed to me. My dad had been in sales for most of my life and that seemed like it could be interesting, so I got my resume on the desk of a recruiter who specialized in placing new grads in sales roles. I was placed in a staffing agency, focusing on business development for staffing services, but what really drew me in was people and the mechanics of employment.
Business development turned out to not be for me, and I was back to my list of what appealed to me with a big, thick line through anything sales and sales adjacent. However, I’d added a new interest from business development calls turning into recruiting calls. From there I started to think about internal Human Resources because it was the intersection of what I knew appealed to me at that point in my career journey. I ended up working two jobs for about a year while I tried to land a role in HR. With two undergraduate degrees, I was working one job in retail and one as a technical editor for a company that did secret shopping for apartment complexes. Then I made a phone call to someone from my past who worked in HR, and that phone call is what truly started an extremely fulfilling career that has taken me all over the world and given me the opportunity to be the HR Lady for so many wonderful people.
I felt very fortunate to make a call and ask someone in my (very limited at that time) network if they knew of any open HR positions that were willing to train. It just so happened, she told me, that she was looking for an HR Generalist. After confirming that she was willing to train me, I went through the interview process and was ultimately hired! The biggest factor in the decision to hire me was because of my fluency in Spanish, so one of my degrees actually ended up launching my career.
As an HR Generalist for a manufacturing company, I got my hands in as much as they would let me. Most of all, I quickly realized I had finally figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I found HR to be fascinating and completely different from what I expected. I was thinking it would be fairly black and white; it’s quite the opposite. Each problem presents a new opportunity to learn and develop. Having accepted that HR was my jam, I decided to make it official with a Master’s of Science in Human Resources Management.
After finishing grad school, my career really started cooking with gas. I was an HR department of one person for an international company that took me all over the world. I learned so much in the role, not only about all things HR, but also about myself. I did some small business consulting and individual career coaching as a side hustle, and I became super drawn to what is now known as fractional HR. As my experience and understanding grew, I moved into leadership and people management roles in a few different industries, all the while continuing to keep my HR toolbox sharp and ready.
That brings me to SWCtx. After being laid off from the tech industry, I was trying to figure out what was next in the weird 2023 job market. Once again, networking changed the trajectory of my career and put me in touch with someone who had a consulting project they needed help with, which led to another client, and SW Consulting came to be.
At SWCtx, we focus on holistic Human Resources. We look at everything from a macro and a micro view, and employee experience is considered at every step. We evolve with the changing landscape of working and being part of the workforce, and we help our clients future-proof their businesses and careers. For me, SWCtx isn’t just a business, it’s an opportunity to create meaningful change in the working world, and I can’t wait to see where that takes us.
